Your note on the gems needing/having money in the first big Greg Universe post + your later thoughts on Pearl’s relationship to human culture makes me imagine when she “went back and paid for” the cookie cat ice cream she did it completely wrong. Like, “Oh, humans want these papers in exchange for goods, I saw this a couple times! Here is some of those papers.” And she hands the clerk some dollars along with some yen and pesos and a euro she found. These other ones are much more colorful.
That’s marvelous. Pearl with no concept of money, giving people coupons and notepads and entire newspapers. The concept of checks completely confuses her, she just hands over a box of them and is like “Surely this is sufficient paper. This really isn’t an effective means of barter, but I suppose you know what you’re doing!”
Like every business in town just knows to send Greg an invoice at the end of the month, along with a box of all the useless paper shit Pearl tried to use to “buy” things.
