Usagi, I think, gets airbending. Air is the element of freedom, and I guess we can all agree that Usagi isn’t really a RULES PERSON. Besides, she is peaceful, she doesn’t want to fight, it’s her duty but never her desire. She cares about everyone and everything, she is (generally) open and easy-going, and the path of least resistance would be totally about her if she didn’t have to save the world twice in semester.
WITH REI IT’S WAY TOO OBVIOUS AHAH. Say first think later, always angry and ready to snap, proud, self-confident, enjoying her power, loyal, spontaneous, DO I EVEN HAVE TO THINK, YOU DO ALREADY FIREBEND
(THOUGH. I think she’d have huge problems with actually CONTROLLING her element, and complicated techniques, such as lightning, won’t be easy for her to master. She is more Zuko than Iroh, definitely)Ami would go with her element, too, but I’d better give her earthbending. She is extremely good at waiting and observing, and calculating the right moment. And she IS resistant if needed, she will stand like a stone wall and won’t waver if her friends are in danger. Also, earthbending is more about protection than any other art, and Ami is enormously protective indeed. And she is such a good thinker, I bet she’d be one of favorite Bumi students.
Makoto would be an earthbender, too. Her personality gives her a lot of potential for firebending, but I’d choose her desire to protect above everything else. Besides, she is such a pure creature, and so totally unable to lie as only an earthbender can be.
Minako goes to Water Tribe without any doubt. She is ALL about flexibility, she will find her enemy’s weak points in like a second and GOODNIGHT SWEET PRINCE. Waterbending is great for both attack and defense, it demands a lot of shrewdness, and this is what Minako has IN ABUNDANCE. Also guys. GUYS. FUCKING BLOODBENDING. Minako will be THRILLED to learn it, she will be already extremely dangerous warrior at this point, but this technique will make her MURDEROUS. I bet she’d become one of the most legendary waterbenders long before her death.
Michiru SAME SWEETHEART. I always stand for Michuru and Minako having much more in common than they’d probably want to admit. She would be an absolutely different kind of a bender – where Minako would be loud, Michiru would go unnoticed, while Mina would be so glad to show off, Michiru would disappear quietly into the shadows. Water is an element of many possibilities, it doesn’t have two bending school for nothing (swamp guys were not really a school I guess).
For Haruka, FIREBENDING MY LOVE. She’d probably be greatly offended by such a suggestion, as Fire Nation people were Bad Guys and oppressors, but she has all qualities of a good firebender while lacking certain she’d better have to earthbend (sorry baby but you’re too soft and nervous, and inclined to contemplating too much upon your fate). Also let’s be real, she is 100% attack and 0% defense, and waiting and listening is not about her AT ALL.
Setsuna is HARD. I mean she is a little ‘above’ other senshi which would make her a good White Lotus member, and if you are a White Lotus member it’s not really important which type of bending you have. I mean she is more of Iroh than Bumi but I’d never make her a firebender. Earthbending though works kind of well – thoughtfulness, protectiveness AND A LOT OF FUCKING POWER. Also earthbending has an incline towards respecting rules and duty (more than water and air bending I’d say), and Setsuna DOES respect them.
Hotaru. OH BOY. EVEN MORE HARD. I mean I’d make her an earthbender because, like, her only attack was defense, but what about her ability to fucking destroy everything around her. HA I’LL JUST MAKE HER AN AVATAR. Shit no Avatar is supposed to protect. UGH. Okay, whatever, she is certainly not an airbender and none of a firebender, so I’m left with two choices… I guess I’ll opt for earthbender after all, it works for me better and if she’ll need to destroy something, she’ll just let it fell through the ground or kinda.
Chibiusa goes into firebending camp! I often see her sorted to the same squad where Usagi goes, but I’m Team Unlike Mother here. They have many similarities, but Chibs IS a different person with different background and different defining traits. Unlike Usagi, she is ALL about action – I mean she fucked off in the past to save her mom and fix what she ruined when she was, like, FIVE. And she srtongly wills to become a soldier and to fight and to act, she jumps into a battle even when she is not asked (ESPECIALLY if she is not asked, DID YOU DARE TO DOUBT HER FIGHTING SKILLS? PINK SUGAR YOUR ASS). Her first reaction when facing the trouble is to gather her shit and ACT. And she loves being cool and great and in power, and she is kind of hot-headed (at least, much more than Usagi), and stubborn and determined and self-assured. Firebender she’ll be, and Aunt Rei will be her proud (and loud) teacher.
NOW STARLIGHTS BECAUSE I LOVE THEM AND THEY NEVER GET INCLUDED ANYWHERE
Seiya SUDDENLY joins waterbenders, because I find Seiya more sly than loud, and really flexible – she got adapted to Earth better than other girls, and she mirrors other people when she interacts with them, I mean she used (I believe 90% unintentionally) different styles of interaction while talking to different people (compare how she behaved around Usagi, Michiru, Haruka and the conductor in the same episode). She has certains firebending traits (her fighting style is primarily attacking, for example), and she’d look hot in Fire Nation uniform (the most important obvs), but I choose waterbending for her nonetheless.
Yaten AHAHAH YATEN IS THIS FUCKING OWL WHO WANTED TO DESTROY EVERYONE TRYING TO APPROACH ITS LIBRARY. Okay, she gets sorted to earthbenders, because she is nothing of fire- and airbender, and waterbender actually as well because all she really wants is to be LEFT FUCKING ALONE, and I can’t help but imagine her making an angry stone tent around herself like Toph did. I waver around waterbending a little cause healing, but as far as I can recall, Yaten was never shown actually HEALING, quite the contrary, her asshole remarks were pointedly harmful. So welcome to earthbending ranks which grow impressively.
I’m super tired ahah. Well only Taiki is left and she will be a firebender, because she is a stubborn self-opinionated ass, and she is into rules and hierarchy and order. She tends to think a lot before attacking, but that will make her a smart bender, and AT LAST someone from my firebending squad will properly tame her own element.

HI YES YOU CALLED? I DO INDEED HAVE QUARTET HEADCANONS (AND I LOVE YOURS TOO AAAA)
I know you already talked about Chibs, but I always like to imagine her as a nonbender who can throw knives kinda like how Mai does. And she gets other weapons too, like swords and axes and she’ll be the embodiment of the trope where the person is asked to drop their weapons and they pull out a RIDICULOUS amount of weapons like child where do you put all those
Anyway, CereCere is totally waterbender; she’s pretty shrewd and deadly as well but there’s also an elegance to her fighting that she likes to embrace. I imagine her fighting style as kinda like Pearl from SU, or hell, even somewhat similar to Katara. She’s quick, she’s sharp, she’s flexible, and damned if she isn’t a hella good plantbender (since plantbending is a subset of waterbending).
PallaPalla I often flicker between air and water, since she has that light breezy personality of an airbender, air is the element of freedom like you said and PallaPalla hates rules and PallaPalla hates being told what to do. But at the same time I always headcanon her as the most flexible and versatile of the future squad, with the most attacks and the most abilities, she can attack and defend and confuse and distract and do all sorts of things. Water would work well for her as well; the bloodbender aspect would call as a homage to her dead moon personality since she always liked voodoo. SHE’D BE SCARY AS HELL IS WHAT I’M SAYING. I’m liking water more and more, honestly.
JunJun is definitely earth kingdom by heritage, she’s strong and stubborn and steadfast but I think I’d like to place her in the nonbending camp with Chibs. She’d be the Ty Lee to Chibiusa’s Mai, doing acrobatics and chi-blocking people and just being very formidable even against powerful benders. She’d be great at martial arts and probably blends the fighting styles of both Suki and Ty Lee. Maybe she also gets an electric glove for the lightning aspect if this takes place in an LoK timeline? But I like AtLA better, so maybe not.
And then there’s VesVes, and with a knife-thrower and a chi-blocker I’d say we definitely need a firebender and GOOD GOD DOES VESVES FIT THE ROLE. She’s brash, aggressive, fast, she’d probably master the fire whip technique, and utterly hotheaded. What I’m saying is she’d probably have no control over her element, meaning that she can GENERATE a lot of fire but would probably get it everywhere. In time she might develop a new technique of bending fire in the shape of animals, but that’s probably an advanced move that she’ll develop a lot later.
Also, Snumps, I just got a couple of cool ideas. First of all, Kyoshi Warrior Mako, because yes. Second of all, combustion-bending Taiki. Combustion-bending (like what P’Li or Combustion man did) probably requires a shit ton of focus, which I can kinda see Taiki doing. Plus, she certainly has enough room on her giant forehead for that eye tattoo the combustion-benders always seem to have. SPARKY SPARKY BOOM LADY!

I LOVE all non-bender headcanons!! I just didn’t go for them because I tried to assign each girl with some bending, BUT I’M ALWAYS HERE FOR MUGGLES, BECAUSE FUCKING ASAMI AND SUKI AND SOKKA OKAY NON-BENDERS ARE AMAZING
And YES YES FOR COMBUSTION BENDING TAIKI, I totally forgot that this form of bending is a thing, and it makes everything 120% more amazing, AND I LAUGHED SO HARD ABOUT HER FOREHEAD BECAUSE REALLY
