from my experience, the easiest way to prevent yourself from unintentional whitewashing a character in your art is to select the color from the darkest section of their skin (from ref), then work it up from that (add lighting, highlights…), for example:

you can see that the lightest shade of her skin (the nose tip) is peachy, the mid tone (the cheeks) is kinda okay, the local skin color is actually the darkest. this is just my tip for picking colors from reference, it takes no work to get sb’s skin right. @farronheit I’d very much appreciate if you could share this
